About Stand:
Stand is a new insurance startup revolutionizing how society assesses, mitigates, and adapts to climate risks. Our leadership team has extensive experience in insurance and climate science: building billions in market value at prior ventures in insurtech, wildfire, and real estate. We’re expanding our technical team to develop groundbreaking technologies for quantifying climate risks at the property and community levels, and we’re hiring an exceptional, multidisciplinary simulation engineering intern to be a key part of this effort.

Background:
Until now, we have known that distinct homes and locations respond differently to climate catastrophes like wildfire. However, we have struggled to assess these mechanisms accurately. Consequently, homeowners are not informed of what they need to do to better protect their homes, and insurance companies give little credit to mitigation work. At Stand, by applying deterministic physics models and cutting-edge artificial intelligence, we add a deep understanding of a home’s unique risk environment to the calculus of writing insurance. This opens up more homes to coverage, encourages proactive measures to protect communities, and nurtures a more sustainable relationship between our neighborhoods and our environment.
The Role:
As a Multidisciplinary Engineering Intern on the Applied Science Team, you will be a key part of developing our models, working closely with other expert engineers, technologists, and our leadership team in a multidisciplinary environment. We are looking at physics-based simulation in a different way than has been done before – training machine learning models to understand the fundamentals of deterministic physics. This candidate would have a front-row seat and direct contributing role to scaling traditionally expensive, and heretofore limited in application, CFD and FEA, into an automated workhorse, capable of operating 10,000x faster and democratizing how society leverages our compute resources to characterize the physical world around us.
What we are looking for:
Proficient in Python scripting, with experience in creating automation workflows and pipelines, and exposure to DevOps practices for streamlined development, testing, and deployment of scalable solutions. Bonus: Fortran coding.
Possess strong thermofluids and heat transfer intuition, with the ability to apply this knowledge to run and validate both computational and machine learning models.
Familiar with the fundamentals of computational simulation tools — ideally computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite element analysis (FEA) — with experience in creating simulations and validating them against experimental data.
Skilled in navigating multidisciplinary environments, eager to learn new concepts and applications beyond past experience, and passionate about productionizing expertise into cutting-edge solutions.
