About Stand:

Stand is a new insurance startup revolutionizing how society assesses, mitigates, and adapts to climate risks.  We are seeking a highly analytical and motivated insurance summer intern to work directly with insurance actuarial, product, and underwriting teams to enhance pricing and underwriting decisions.  This is a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in an innovative, fast-paced startup environment tackling some of the toughest challenges in insurance.

Until now, we have known that distinct homes and locations respond differently to climate catastrophes like wildfire. However, we have struggled to assess these mechanisms accurately. Consequently, homeowners are not informed of what they need to do to better protect their homes, and insurance companies give little credit to mitigation work. At Stand, by applying deterministic physics models and cutting-edge artificial intelligence, we add a deep understanding of a home’s unique risk environment to the calculus of writing insurance.

The Role:

As an actuarial intern on the insurance product team, you will help solve challenging business problems to improve pricing and underwriting strategies.  You will work with real-world insurance data to develop insights that drive profitable growth.  In our small fast-paced environment, the successful candidate will possess strong analytical and communication skills, as well as a demonstrated ability to execute thoroughly in a collaborative environment.  In this role, you will gain exposure to insurance pricing, product, reserving and analytics.  You will have direct interaction with company leadership and all functions of the company.

Must Haves:

• Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics, Economics, Actuarial Science, Data Science, Finance or related discipline with strong academic record.

• A problem solver with a keen sense of analytical reasoning and solid foundations in mathematical concepts.

• Naturally curious and have a passion for learning

• Proactive and collaborative, with leadership experience in student organization, academic project or community service organization

• Strong written and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to articulate technical concepts clearly

Nice to Haves:

• Passed at least one Actuarial Exam

• Experience with SQL, Python or other programming language

• Familiarity with data visualization tools or querying large datasets
