Full Stack Software Engineer
Full-Time
San Francisco, CA | Seattle, WA
About Stand:
Stand is a new insurance startup revolutionizing how society assesses, mitigates, and adapts to climate risks. We’re expanding our technical team to develop groundbreaking technologies for quantifying climate risks at the property and community levels, and we’re hiring an exceptional, Full Stack Engineer to be a key part of this effort.
Until now, we have known that distinct homes and locations respond differently to climate catastrophes like wildfire. However, we have struggled to assess these mechanisms accurately. Consequently, homeowners are not informed of what they need to do to better protect their homes, and insurance companies give little credit to mitigation work. At Stand, by applying deterministic physics models and cutting-edge artificial intelligence, we add a deep understanding of a home’s unique risk environment to the calculus of writing insurance.
How to apply: Interested applicants can email Nick (nick@getstand.com) sharing their resume and your Github/Gitlab page as well as a link to one project you were the primary contributor to. This project should showcase key skills and practices that you value.
The Role:
As a member of the software engineering team you will be expected to manage many different applications and pipelines. This ranges from aggressively automating traditional insurance workflows(policy management, payments, claims, underwriting) to creating more unique workflows such as wildfire preparedness inspections and ongoing monitoring. Team members will collaborate closely with our applied science team on productionization efforts, which include cloud infrastructure, data visualization tools, real-time monitoring and data collection pipelines.
Above what is typically required of Software Engineers, Stand team members are expected to help explore the redefinition of what software engineering is. With the rapid rise of code generating Large Language Models (LLMs) and ever changing landscape of low/no-code tools Software engineering is changing. We are looking for developers who are interested using this change to enable leaner and faster teams. We are also looking for developers who are interested in navigating the balance between craftsmanship and rapid prototyping in a fast pace startup environment. All of this is in service to one goal. To not only prove that we can build a billion dollar tech native company with a small team but, also be faster because of it!
We are looking for curious developers who are not just implementing requirements, but also interested in learning the underlying problems of their stakeholder (ranging from actuarial science to computation fluid dynamics). We are also looking for people who are hungry, excited not only to do the fun stuff but also cut through the grunt work. Team members are expected to own the entire lifecycle of their projects, from requirement gathering to long term maintenance.
Applicants should have 5-10 years experience developing production level applications using modern high level programming languages. We are open to hiring candidates outside of this range if they show exceptional talent and drive.
Founder Mindset:
One of our key attribute we are looking for in applicants is a founder mindset. Our founding team includes founders / CEOs / CPOs from Metromile, Policygenius, WePay and HotelTonight. On top of that our team is filled with people who have founded / worked at early stage startups before. To us a founder mindset means:
Ownership and Accountability: Take full responsibility for projects from start to finish, ensuring impactful outcomes, not just task completion.
Purposeful Execution: Work with speed and quality, making fast decisions when needed, while understanding the balance between strategy and action.
Clear Communication and Autonomy: Communicate clearly and operate independently by understanding the broader context of tasks and decisions.
Solution-Oriented and Collaborative: Focus on solutions, embrace constructive conflict with positive intent, and build trust through reliable action.
Must Haves:
Experience building production level applications built with modern high level programming language (Python, Ruby, Rust, ect)
Experience deploying, maintaining and monitoring apps on modern PAAS systems(Heroku, Vercel, Railway).
Comfort Learning new tools, frameworks and languages quickly.
Curiosity towards how LLMs will change the landscape of software engineering.
Conviction that building well tested, clean code saves time.
Ability to work with end users in tight feed back loops to build better user experiences.
Ability to own projects and work directly with stake holders.
Interest in our Mission.
Nice to Haves:
Experience working with Retool
Retool is a low code platform that we are using to speed up rapid prototyping and acts as a central hub for visualizing our various systems and workflows.
Experience working at startups in a regulated industry
An agile mindset (not Scrum)
Individuals and interactions over processes and tools
Working software over comprehensive documentation
Customer collaboration over contract negotiation
Responding to change over following a plan
